Not - as many imagine - a land of manicured gardens, the name rather refers to the natural beauty found along this 300km stretch and including towns such as Oudtshoorn, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The scenery can be dramatic, with steep gorges and indigenous forests that plunge into the Indian Ocean, in contrast to the wide sweeping beaches and lagoons that characterise the western Garden route. As you venture inland to Oudtshoorn, the landscape undergoes a remarkable change and becomes semi desert - ideally suited to ostrich farming that gives the town its fame.
