

The largest of the British Leeward Islands and synonymous with maritime history Antigua is renowned for its splendid beaches and its quaint, picturesque harbours. An English settlement since the 17th century the island was discovered by Columbus at the end of the 15th century. Originally totally reliant upon sugar cane production, today tourism is the principle industry. Sport and recreation are popular pastimes. With the legendary cricketer, Viv Richards, being one of Antigua's most famous sons it is no wonder that cricket plays such an important part in the lives of the populace. Antigua's annual Sailing Week draws the crowds in numbers with throngs of competitors and tourists alike gathering around the terraces of the Admiral's Inn in English Harbour.
